Help needed again to change the Google results for “gay Muslims”
Hi everyone,
You may have seen this post being reblogged. I was in awe of the phenomenal response. The tumblr community has really got behind this and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
The aim is to dislodge the current top result when searching for “gay Muslims” which is an anti-gay website and replace it with the website for Imaan London which is a UK based LGBTQ Muslim support group. The technique which I thought would work (googlebombing) was to search for “gay Muslims” and then click on the result for Imaan London, thus catapulting it to the top of the list.
However, the way Google now presents its results has changed. It remembers a lot of information about you and while it may seem to some people Imaan is at the top, this is because of what Google is remembering about your last visit.
The way to get the results to change it by LINKING to the Imaan website as much as we can.
down-sizing (very kindly) explains:
The way Google prioritizes results is not by how many people click a link, however, but by how many people link to it. So if everyone posts something with Imaan’s homepage link [imaanlondon.wordpress.com] and the words “gay Muslim” (tumblr, twitter, facebook, doesn’t matter, as long as Google’s “spider” programs can read it) then it will jump dramatically in the search results. You can do this on tumblr, you can create a post and write “gay Muslims” or “LGBT Muslims” and then use the hyperlink button to link it to the Imaan homepage. It’d be better to write gay Muslims as LGBT Muslims already brings up positive resources first (AFAIK but can’t hurt doing it twice). If you have Twitter or Facebook and would be willing to do the same, that would be really helpful.
So, thank you once more. I am humbled by the support the tumblr community has extended. I never envisaged such a huge reaction to my initial post. My objective is for any Muslim who turn to the internet to understand their feelings and how this can be reconciled with their religion to find a safe space, not one which demonises their very existence and passes it off as an unnatural abomination.PLEASE: REBLOG, SIGNAL BOOST
